Chapter 222 — On This Special Day

Blade of Dawn Page 2 of 2

Boundless power, knowledge, mysteries, authority, wealth—even eternity like that of the gods—all lay within reach.

Virodai drew a deep breath and smiled. "We have waited far too long for this day..."

On the second day of the "Star Days," the southern frontier still had a clear sky all night: another fine day for stargazing.

After supper, Hetty immediately went back to her room to fetch her silver star-gazing disc, but Rebecca merely stood before the windowsill, staring blankly at the night sky outside. She looked at the twinkling stars, then suddenly wrinkled her nose, and an expression of mild vexation appeared on her face.

But no one noticed this viscount's daughter. She merely stood dazed for a while, then turned and walked toward her own room.

The "Star Days" were important days for mages, but they had little to do with her.

She could not control a star-gazing disc, and naturally could not perceive any magic-related mysteries from the shifting of the stars. In her childhood she too had stood on the terrace with Aunt Hetty and her teachers, eyes wide, gazing at the night sky, but...

It was truly super boring.

She did not like the stars at all.

On the road back to her room, Rebecca tried hard to fill her head with matters of runes and magic circles and think of nothing else, but a tall figure waiting in the corridor forced her to stop.

"Ancestor Yanren?" She stared blankly at Gao Yang. "What's the matter?"

"Today is the day the stars shine brightest. Aren't you going up to the terrace to watch them, like Hetty?"

"No," Rebecca shook her head vigorously, putting on an air of indifference. "I can't make sense of it anyway. Every time I look at the stars I want to fall asleep..."

Looking at this girl who was so poor at disguising her feelings, Gao Yang could not help but laugh. "I have a gift for you."

"A gift?" Rebecca's eyes lit up slightly. "What gift?!"

Gao Yang took from beside him the object that had taken no small effort to have the craftsmen successfully produce: "Something wonderful that will let you see a great many stars without the aid of an astrolabe."

Rebecca studied the object curiously. It was a large metal tube, uneven in thickness, with crystal lenses seemingly set into both ends, adjustable knobs at its midsection, and a clasping mechanism for attaching it to a stand.

Its design was truly bizarre, utterly unlike the style of the machine blueprints the Xuanmai Sect had drawn before, yet somehow, from the very first glance, Rebecca found herself deeply drawn to it.

"What is this?" she asked curiously.

"A telescope," Gao Yang said. "An Eagle Eye spell that needs no magic power."
