Chapter 1238 — Danger Defused

The Blossom Guardian

Because the man's death would trigger the detonator inside his body and blow the explosives here to kingdom come — Wei Zhao was naturally not about to be so rash.

"Aagh!" The man let out a shriek — the pain of having his chest cut open was more than he could endure! He was a death-sworn soldier, unafraid to die, but that did not mean he was unafraid of pain!

"Feeling good now, are you? Didn't you want to play a suicide game?" Wei Zhao paid no heed to the man's howls and briskly opened up his chest cavity — surgery of this caliber was effortless work for him.

"You're not even human!" the man screamed at the top of his lungs.

Now, at last, he regretted it. Why had he played a suicide game with Wei Zhao? Had he known the suffering it would bring, he would rather have taken poison from the start and blown this madman to pieces with him! But now he could not move at all — nothing was left to him but speech. Suicide? How was he supposed to manage that?

"Dying to die now, are you?" Wei Zhao asked mildly. "No problem. You'll get your wish soon enough — once I've taken out the remote device, you can die."

The man knew that whatever he said would be useless, would earn him nothing but Wei Zhao's mockery. So he simply shut his eyes and did not utter another word.

Very quickly Wei Zhao found the explosives' remote control inside the man's chest cavity. The device was exquisitely made, evidently the most advanced technology in existence, activated by the pulse around the heart.

Naturally, for a world-famous international criminal organization, the technology at its command was not to be

underestimated.

The Red Conch — Wei Zhao had heard of them before, though he had never crossed paths with them. Most of his past missions had been the sort where a man sold his life for money; that he had never run into Red Conch specifically was no surprise.

Now, though, this remote device made Wei Zhao's expression turn somewhat grave. To disable the control, one would have to destroy either its power supply or its transmitting component.

That, however, was no great difficulty for Wei Zhao. He reached out and gripped one end of the remote device, and at once the jade pendant at his chest began to pulse a warning: this spot, presumably, was dangerous — squeeze there, and it might set off the explosives.

Wei Zhao tried another spot; the pendant still warned him. Unhurried, he shifted from position to position, one after another, until he found a spot where the pendant gave no warning. Without the slightest hesitation, he squeezed.

A sound of shattering metal rang out; half the remote device was crushed to powder in his palm. For a Mystic Rank expert, that was no problem at all.

Pulling out the crushed fragment, Wei Zhao examined the interior carefully. Sure enough, this was the wireless transmitter section — with that circuit pulverized, the control could be activated all it liked and still be no more dangerous than a tiger without teeth.

Even if the remote device were triggered, it posed no danger whatsoever.

Wei Zhao casually ripped the remains of the remote device away from beside the man's heart, paying no mind at all to whether he lived or died.

A death-sworn soldier of this kind had no value to exploit, and no useful information was to be had from his mouth either. Whether he lived or died was no concern of Wei Zhao's.

Once the remote device was torn out, Wei Zhao heard — as expected — no explosion whatsoever. The danger had been completely defused.

"Impossible. That's impossible!" The man stared at Wei Zhao in horror. He had never imagined Wei Zhao could strip the remote device away so easily without detonating a single charge!

By now Wei Zhao could not even be bothered to exchange words with him. He tossed the control to the ground and stamped it to powder, then with the tip of his knife neatly sliced through the ropes binding Feng Xiaoxiao's hands, feet, and body — swift and clean, without a trace of dawdling, the blade never once brushing her clothes.

"Waaah — hubby Wei Zhao, you scared me to death just now!" The instant she was free, Feng Xiaoxiao flung herself at Wei Zhao and clung to him.

"Ha ha, it's fine — I was only stringing the idiot along." Wei Zhao patted her gently on the back, consoling her.

"See, I said you weren't that stupid — you'd never really kill yourself!" Feng Xiaoxiao let out a breath of relief. "But it really was dangerous. I haven't long to live as it is; there was no need for you to risk yourself saving me."

"Even if you were already dead — even if you were a corpse — I would still bring you back. And you're not dead. Don't talk such foolishness again. Your illness is nothing; I will find a way to cure it."

Wei Zhao said.

"Mm!" Feng Xiaoxiao nodded. After this episode, her faith in Wei Zhao had only grown deeper.

Perhaps Wei Zhao really could cure her illness, after all?

"Let's go. We're heading downstairs — your father must be beside himself by now." Wei Zhao set Feng Xiaoxiao down from his arms and spoke to her.

"All right! And what about him?" Feng Xiaoxiao pointed at the man on the sofa, whose chest Wei Zhao had opened.

"Oh, isn't he a death-sworn soldier? He'll be dead soon enough," Wei Zhao said indifferently.

When he had removed the remote device, Wei Zhao had already known this man would not last long. The device had been installed near the heart meridian; once it was torn out, the heart meridian was bound to be damaged, and the man would likely die of massive bleeding before long. But there was no need for Wei Zhao to heal him. Even if his own energy cost him nothing, he would never spend it mending an enemy.

The man's life or death had nothing to do with Wei Zhao, and Wei Zhao felt not the slightest shred of pity.

"Oh — then bye-bye! Next life, don't be a death-sworn soldier, all right? You're really scary!" Feng Xiaoxiao waved a hand at the man.

The man rolled his eyes and closed them. He knew, and he sensed it too, that his life was nearing its end. In that moment he felt a dread such as he had never known — a feeling he had never once experienced since he was small, since the day he had been raised as a death-sworn soldier.

With regret and unwillingness, the man closed his eyes.

Wei Zhao led Feng Xiaoxiao downstairs without so much as a backward glance at the man. This person was nothing more than a passerby in Wei Zhao's life; when he fell before Wei Zhao, Wei Zhao did not even spare him a single extra word.

When Wei Zhao, holding Feng Xiaoxiao's hand, slowly walked out the ground-floor door of the high-rise, the police and the agents of the mysterious investigation bureau waiting at a distance were struck dumb!

Wei Zhao had actually, in the midst of such peril, truly rescued Feng Xiaoxiao — and with such composure, without a hint of panic, walking step by step out of the high-rise as steady as could be!

What did that mean? It meant Wei Zhao had completely eliminated the danger, and had no fear at all that the explosives would blow! But wasn't the explosives' remote control integrated with the Red Conch death-sworn soldier?
