Chapter 1145 — Feng Xiaoxiao's Misunderstanding

The Blossom Guardian

But no sooner had they reached the car than Shen Yushu dumped the drinks in her arms into Feng Xiaoxiao's hands, keeping only a single can for herself. "Here — you take them over!"

"Huh?" Before Feng Xiaoxiao could recover from her startlement, Shen Yushu was already hurrying off toward Wei Zhao.

Shen Yushu trotted up to Wei Zhao. Once Tang Yun had slipped the oyster meat into his mouth, she popped open the can and handed it to him, smiling sweetly. "Brother Shield, now that you've eaten your senior wife's oyster, take a sip of your junior wife's drink!"

"Sneaky Shu, you're despicable! I was just about to bring Wei Zhao his drink!" Feng Xiaoxiao, arms full of cans, was about to explode with rage. She glared at Shen Yushu. "What kind of junior wife are you? You haven't even been certified — you just call yourself one. I'm the genuine junior wife."

"Hehe, so what? That's what you get for being half a beat slow." Shen Yushu was utterly unbothered.

"Hmph, hmph!" Feng Xiaoxiao glared at Shen Yushu and said nothing.

"All right, all right, I'll let you have it..." Shen Yushu thought it over and decided to yield the chance to Feng Xiaoxiao after all. What was the point of competing with a girl who would soon be dead?

Gu Mengyao exchanged a glance with Tang Yun as she came back, and each saw in the other's eyes a helpless, wry smile. Feng Xiaoxiao and Shen Yushu really were a match for each other — a day without a few squabbles and neither of them could be happy.

But once you got used to it, it was nothing much; neither of them meant any harm, after all. They only vied for the upper hand in words, never to each other's detriment.

After a fine feast of grilled seafood, Wei Zhao put out the fire and gathered up the food waste, bagging it to carry away when they left. This was no public beach with someone to collect the trash; leaving it all lying here would plainly do harm to the environment.

As planned beforehand, Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao took one tent, while Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, and Tang Yun took the other.

The two tents stood neither far apart nor close together, but on that silent shore, if Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao truly did anything, the other tent would very likely hear it.

After dinner, Gu Mengyao and Tang Yun dragged Shen Yushu back to their tent, leaving only Wei Zhao and Feng Xiaoxiao.

"Shall we head back too?" The mood between them had turned ambiguous and awkward; Wei Zhao hesitated before asking.

"Mm..." Feng Xiaoxiao nodded, face flushed. Now that the moment had come, she felt timid again. Tonight — was that legendary thing really going to happen?

At the thought, Feng Xiaoxiao felt a stir of anticipation and a flush of shyness both.

Since she had decided to be with Wei Zhao, in her heart she naturally regarded him as her first man and her last — the only man in this life.

Feng Xiaoxiao's circumstances allowed no room for hesitation or second thoughts; once she had made up her mind, she had to see it through. Others might have the luxury of regret, of breaking up — but Feng Xiaoxiao had no time. In her mother's family, not one person had ever escaped the curse of fate; it had been so for generation after generation, and Feng Xiaoxiao had never once hoped she might be the exception.

So when it came to choosing a partner, she had to be more than careful; once chosen, there would be no room to take it back.

Even so, alone with Wei Zhao in a tent, Feng Xiaoxiao still felt a certain reserve.

For all her usual boldness, in matters like this most girls turned hesitant and bashful.

"What's wrong?" Wei Zhao had noticed something off about her too. Just now Feng Xiaoxiao was trailing along at his side all fidgety and sheepish, like a child nursing a grievance — not at all like her usual self.

"N-nothing..." Deep down, Feng Xiaoxiao was struggling with herself.

She kept asking herself: did she actually like Wei Zhao or not? Was she with him to get her revenge, or had she truly fallen in love with him?

Originally she had had no such tangled feelings. As she saw it, whether she was stringing Wei Zhao along or loving him, once she slept with him he would care for her more, and when she died he would grieve all the harder.

But now that the moment was at hand, she could not help hesitating. After all, for any girl the first time was precious; thinking about it was one thing, doing it quite another.

"Heh... what, afraid I'll eat you up?" Seeing the awkwardness, Wei Zhao cracked a joke.

But the speaker meant nothing by it while the listener took it to heart. Wei Zhao's perfectly ordinary joke had no double meaning at all — yet in Feng Xiaoxiao's ears it was loaded with them.

Generally speaking, there was nothing much to the phrase "I'll eat you up," but its extended meaning was rather suggestive.

If one insisted on pinning down its exact interpretations, they could be divided into three kinds.

The first usually happened between lovers: the man, looking at his woman's luscious, dewy beauty, wanted to push her down, but could not say so outright, and so he said, obliquely, that he wanted to eat her up.

Or else the woman, deeply stirred, wanted to give herself to her boyfriend but was too embarrassed to say so plainly, and so she said, "Eat me up."

"I... I..." Feng Xiaoxiao did not know what to say.

Seeing her expression, Wei Zhao was briefly taken aback, then it dawned on him that his words had been misunderstood. But heaven above, he had truly meant nothing by it! He had only tossed off a joke, meaning: I'm no great tiger — what, are you afraid I'll eat you up?

But clearly Feng Xiaoxiao had taken it the wrong way, and if he tried to explain, he would only make it worse. He could only smile awkwardly. "I was only joking. Come on, the sea breeze is strong out here — let's go back to the tent."
