Chapter 1041 — The Real Side of Sun Jingyan: "Have You Printed Those Business Cards I Had You Print?"
"Printed! Exactly what you asked for — gilt-edged business cards. They look really high-end!" Xiao Wangba said hurriedly.
"And the sports car? Did you buy it?" Wu Chengtian asked.
"Bought that too — an Audi, just as you specified, Brother Chengtian!" Xiao Wangba said. "Brand new, hasn't even been plated yet!"
"Oh, no need to plate it for now. It's a gift," Wu Chengtian said. "I'll go pick it up first thing tomorrow morning! But in front of other people, you have to say the company earned that car — understand?"
"Understood!" Xiao Wangba said at once.
After finishing his call with Xiao Wangba, Wu Chengtian dialed Sun Jingyan's number.
At that moment Sun Jingyan was soaking in the bathtub, quietly savoring the warmth of the moment.
For a girl to start a business alone in Songshan City, to hold up a whole company on her own — it was simply too hard! Every day she had to disguise herself, to play the part of a mature, cold-blooded female CEO; yet deep in her bones she was still a rather delicate girl!
With the mature makeup washed away, the Sun Jingyan of this moment was nothing but a pure, innocent girl of ten — big eyes, long lashes, her hair falling loose about her, and with the bubbles in the bathtub she looked like a little princess out of a fairy tale!
If Wei Zhao were here, he would probably have stared, eyes wide in astonishment — was this Sun Jingyan? However you looked at her, she seemed like the girl next door.
In fact, Wei Zhao's eye for people was very keen. Though he had never seen Sun Jingyan without her makeup, he had guessed that she was wearing a disguise — which had surprised her greatly at the time.
Though Sun Jingyan lived a false life every day, there was no helping it: she had to survive; she had to carve out a world of her own to show her family — to show them that she, Sun Jingyan, was a capable person even without the clan's backing, and not merely a marriage tool for winning the family some benefit!
Only, without the Sun family's backing, Sun Jingyan was just like any other grassroots entrepreneur, quietly running a small company, inching her way forward through brutal competition!
Faced with the family's pressure to marry — or rather, the pressure from a few people in the family — Sun Jingyan had resolutely chosen this hard road. She would walk it, and she would have to produce some results besides!
Picking up her phone, Sun Jingyan idly flipped through the photo album, and caught sight of a few photos of Wei Zhao. She could not help but frown: it had been a long time since she had been in touch with Wei Zhao... but since Wu Chengtian had stopped pestering her, Sun Jingyan had no reason to go looking for Wei Zhao either.
Toward Wei Zhao, Sun Jingyan was full of curiosity! As for liking him — not quite. Sun Jingyan knew that even if she refused the marriage alliance with the Wu family, she still could not take a boyfriend as she pleased. If she casually took one, it might well drive her grandfather out of his mind!
In the Sun family's generation, the young ones were few, and those who had succeeded in cultivating the family's internal arts and broken through to the first layer were fewer still. If the Sun family did not find an ally now, they would not be driven out of the ranks of the great clans, but they would surely slide into decline.
So Sun Jingyan's standard for a partner was clear: she had to like him, and he had to be capable! Sun Jingyan wanted to show her eldest uncle, her second uncle, and her young aunt — no need for them to rush about making introductions; the boyfriend she found herself was outstanding too!
For the present, Sun Jingyan's feeling toward Wei Zhao was nothing more than curiosity. Perhaps there was some goodwill in it, but it was no more than goodwill. Sun Jingyan was a very rational person — as her daily disguises showed plainly enough.
"Hah..." Sun Jingyan sighed quietly to herself. Wei Zhao had entered her field of vision, but as things stood he was still not good enough. His fists and feet were formidable, yes, but compared with a cultivator... the difference was as heaven to earth.
Sun Jingyan's sources of information were cut off. She had no contact with her family, and even less with the police, so of the great events that had taken place in Songshan City some days earlier, she had heard not a one — much less that Wei Zhao had nearly gone back to his hometown to hide.
Just as she was mulling over these tangled matters, a shrill ringtone burst out, giving her quite a fright! She glanced at the caller ID and frowned at once; after hesitating a moment, she still answered.
"This is Sun Jingyan," she said flatly, as though she had never looked at the caller ID at all.
"Jingyan, it's Wu Chengtian!" His voice came over the line, sounding rather excited. "I'm back in Songshan City!"
"Oh. You're back," Sun Jingyan said indifferently.
"That's right — I've invested in a company here. Haha, looks like I'll be stationed in Songshan City from now on. But that means more chances for the two of us to meet!" Wu Chengtian said, putting on airs.
"Oh..." Sun Jingyan had not the slightest interest in whether Wu Chengtian invested in a company. For a child of the great clans, if you used the family's connections to do business, anything you turned your hand to would make money. So if Wu Chengtian really wanted to make money, it was easy enough — but Sun Jingyan could not compare with that!
In Sun Jingyan's eyes, anyone who had a great clan's connections and still could not make money had to be a fool.
"Haha, it's been so long since we met. Shall we go for morning tea together tomorrow?" Wu Chengtian suggested, rather impatiently.
"Tomorrow morning? I have to go to the company; I probably won't have time," Sun Jingyan said flatly, declining his offer.
"Haha, come out and sit with me a while. It's been ages — and let's invite Wei Zhao along too!" Wu Chengtian had deliberately brought up Wei Zhao. In his view, so long as Wei Zhao came, Sun Jingyan would surely come, and then he would have the perfect chance to let her see Wei Zhao's ugly two-timing face.
"Wei Zhao?" Sun Jingyan was slightly startled, and a ripple unavoidably stirred in her heart. Setting aside all her standards for a partner, she did after all think Wei Zhao was a decent sort — only, a notorious outlaw... if she brought a notorious outlaw back to the Sun family, would her grandfather die of rage?
"Yes. When I was in Yanjing, I met Wei Zhao — I even treated him and his friends to a meal, and we had a wonderful time together!" Wu Chengtian said. "So now that I'm back in Songshan City, I was thinking of treating them to another meal. Join us tomorrow?"
"Then... all right..." Only when she heard that Wei Zhao would be there did Sun Jingyan reluctantly agree. She liked Wu Chengtian less and less; though her family wanted her to have more contact with him, most of the time she simply went through the motions.
"Good, then I'll come pick you up at your company tomorrow morning!" Wu Chengtian felt rather sour that Sun Jingyan agreed to morning tea the instant she heard Wei Zhao's name — but at the thought that tomorrow he could expose Wei Zhao, he swallowed it down.
"Mm." Sun Jingyan answered, and hung up.
