Chapter 3475 — He Meiyue's Identity
"Let him thank you with your body?!" Bai Weituo stared at He Meiyue in his arms, somewhat taken aback. Truthfully, he did not believe it—but those words had come from his own girlfriend's mouth, leaving him caught in a dilemma.
He was no fool. Wei Zhao had so many beautiful girlfriends—not to speak of those far away, when Guan Xin was right here before his eyes. Would Wei Zhao really stoop to making a move on He Meiyue?
Sure enough, Guan Xin grew rather annoyed at this. She and Wei Zhao had, after all, more or less confirmed their relationship, so she spoke with perfect justification: "He Meiyue, what exactly do you mean by that? How could Wei Zhao possibly molest you? If he wanted to molest someone, he could molest me whenever he liked—are you prettier than me? Better figured than me? Gentler than me? A better cook than me? More able to help Wei Zhao than me?"
This speech of Guan Xin's only made Bai Weituo even more suspicious.
As for Chief Bai, he stood quietly to one side, watching the people in the room. He said nothing, only observed.
"Bai Weituo, the truth is I don't know what happened either—believe it or not," Wei Zhao said with a shrug, somewhat helplessly.
"I believe it!" Bai Weituo suddenly nodded, gave a cold laugh, shoved He Meiyue away, and with a loud smack slapped her across the face. "You bitch, is there something wrong with you? You wanted to seduce the Chief, and now you frame him too? Do you take me for a Bai called Idiot? If Brother Lin had wanted to do something to you, back in Southeast Asia he could simply have had Kun Cun send you over alone—why go to all the trouble of bringing us all back?"
"I—" He Meiyue was stunned by the blow, staring at Bai Weituo in disbelief. She had never imagined he would hit her.
"He Meiyue, tell us—what is really going on here?" It was then that Chief Bai spoke. "All along, I have felt that there was something purposeful about your being with Bai Weituo. That feeling has never faded—though it was only a feeling. Lately you have performed well, and you have been a fit granddaughter-in-law, so I permitted you and Weituo to be together. But today's business makes me think my feeling was not mistaken. Frankly, if there is a reason behind it all and Weituo forgives you, you may stay. Otherwise, you may simply leave."
"You don't believe me?" He Meiyue gritted her teeth, lifted her face, and looked at Bai Weituo with a kind of stubbornness.
On that fair cheek, the handprint stood out starkly, startling to behold.
Seeing that no one spoke, He Meiyue fell silent as well, at a loss for what to do. Within her heart she hesitated and struggled.
"He Meiyue, what is your relationship with Xuanchen?" Chief Bai suddenly asked.
"Ah? I—" He Meiyue raised her head in shock and looked at Chief Bai.
"When I was at the Five Luminaries Sect, Xuanchen had two female disciples, Little Ten and Little Eleven. Little Eleven was his daughter, named He Meiqi." Chief Bai seemed to sink into memory. "And by Xuanchen's rule, his disciples must take the surname He. You are called He Meiyue, she is called He Meiqi—you must be the Little Ten disciple whom Xuanchen described as having 'died young,' are you not?"
"I—" He Meiyue looked at Chief Bai and could not speak.
"Before, I never gave it much thought—after all, many people share names and surnames. But today something occurred to me, and my guess was not wrong, was it? Little Ten?" Chief Bai said mildly. "Back then, you may have been injured only, your powers utterly lost, but you did not die—you became an ordinary person. And Xuanchen sent you back to the mortal world, to serve as a chess piece that might never be used. Is that not so?"
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry—" He Meiyue wept, sobbing as though her heart would break, and with a thud she dropped to her knees before Chief Bai. "First Grand-Master, forgive me—I did not do it willingly, it was the Master who forced me to do this—"
"So it is as I thought." Chief Bai sighed helplessly. Knowing Ancestor Xuanchen as he did, the man was indeed capable of anything, and so his displeasure at He Meiyue faded considerably. "Get up and speak. Since we are of the same sect, there is no need for this. Wei Zhao here may be counted your senior brother. Tell us—why did you frame him?"
"I truly am a disciple of Ancestor Xuanchen, ranked tenth. What my real name is, I do not know either. When I was very small, the Master brought me to the Five Luminaries Sect. Later, during an alchemical refinement, I was gravely injured in an explosion, all my meridians severed—it seemed the Master was testing something, and I nearly died. After I recovered, I had no power left, and I was sent to the mortal world. From then on he paid for my schooling and contacted me only through a single channel, and to this day I have never seen my parents. He has always used them to threaten me, making me do his bidding—"
"Testing? The pill you were refining—was it called the Soul-Returning Golden Pill?" Chief Bai asked suddenly.
"Yes—First Grand-Master, you know of it?" He Meiyue was slightly taken aback.
"I know it. Back then I too was injured in an explosion because of that very pill." Chief Bai smiled bitterly, and the look he turned on He Meiyue softened greatly. It seemed that, in seeking to dispose of him all those years ago, Xuanchen had used such a vicious method—and made He Meiyue the sacrificial test subject.
"Ah?" He Meiyue was instantly dumbfounded.
"Very well, let us not speak of that. I studied that pill formula carefully afterward—it is the formula for a seventh-grade or even eighth-grade pill, and cannot possibly be refined. By ordinary means it will surely explode the furnace and cause injury or qi deviation!" Chief Bai waved a hand. "And today's business—was that also forced on you by him?"
"Yes. I argued with him and reasoned with him, but he would not agree. He threatened me with my parents, and I had no choice but to comply." He Meiyue sighed, then said firmly, "But First Grand-Master, I truly do love Bai Weituo, and I want to be with him!"
"Meiyue—" Bai Weituo now regretted striking her. It seemed she had her own hardships; looked at this way, she was a pitiable person too.
"All right, this business is not your fault." Wei Zhao, for his part, thought of Shen Yushu—that girl with a fate no less bitter, controlled for the same reasons by the same sort of people. If Wei Zhao could forgive Shen Yushu, why could he not forgive He Meiyue?
"Thank you—thank you all—" He Meiyue said gratefully.
"He Meiyue, then apart from this matter, have you ever done anything else bad?" Chief Bai nodded and continued questioning.
