Chapter 1245 — Principal Ding Summons
After all, provoking an opponent of roughly one's own caliber was an unwise choice. Unless this Zhao Fafa and his old man had something wrong with their heads, no one would fight to the death over such a trifle.
Shortly after arriving at school, Wang Zhifeng came to the doorway of the twelfth grade's Class Five. He glanced inside, then said: "Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu, Wei Zhao — come out here a moment, the three of you."
The students in the classroom were instantly curious, and a stir went through the room. Lately Wei Zhao had been keeping very close company with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu; everyone had seen it. Could Wang Zhifeng be summoning them because they showed signs of puppy love?
But wasn't Wei Zhao paired with Tang Yun? Was he tangled up with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu as well? Then again, Gu Mengyao was the school board chairman's daughter — would Wang Zhifeng dare scold her? Dreary school life always bred a taste for gossip, if only to relieve the pressure.
And so, once the three of them had left the classroom, many began whispering among themselves.
Yet even Wei Zhao, one of the parties involved, was at a loss as to why Wang Zhifeng wanted them.
Fortunately, Wang Zhifeng did not dare put on airs in front of the three of them. He had not gone two steps before he turned back to explain: "Principal Ding asked me to fetch you. Something about discussing the orphanage fundraising gala."
So that was it! Wei Zhao nodded. Apart from that, there really was no reason he would be openly linked with Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.
Even Wang Zhifeng himself was somewhat puzzled. When Wei Zhao had first transferred in, he had shown no familiarity with Gu Mengyao, and had instead taken up with Tang Yun. That had led Wang Zhifeng to believe Wei Zhao might merely be some relative of Gu Pengzhan's, and not close to him at that — that he was under Wei Zhao's thumb purely because Wei Zhao had a hold over him, not out of the deference he showed Gu Mengyao.
But now it seemed that was not the case at all. Especially these past few days, with Wei Zhao arriving at and leaving school alongside Tang Yun, Chen Mengyan, Shen Yushu and the others, Wang Zhifeng had begun to feel that matters were likely not as simple as he had imagined.
Even so, Wang Zhifeng had no intention of digging to the root of it. Whatever their relationship might be, it was no concern of his — so long as he offended none of them.
Entering Ding Binggong's office, Ding Binggong did not make a show of rising to greet them. Gu Mengyao might be a rich man's precious daughter, but she was still a student at this school, and Ding Binggong was its principal; a certain dignity had to be maintained.
Fortunately, the young lady was not the domineering sort, and would never behave disrespectfully toward her teachers at school.
"Sit, all of you." Ding Binggong gestured for Gu Mengyao and the other two to take their seats on the sofa opposite, then said: "Yaoyao, Little Shu, and Wei Zhao — I've called you here to discuss holding the orphanage fundraising gala. This is also Chairman Chu's wish. After all, you were the ones who first proposed it. If you have any suggestions, tell me."
Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu exchanged a glance. Neither had any experience in such matters; it had been no more than a passing inspiration on their part. As for offering suggestions, how could they compare with a professional like Ding Binggong?
As principal, Ding Binggong had organized activities for students and teachers more times than he could count, and had far more experience than two students like Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu.
"Principal Ding, we're only students — how could we have your experience? Surely the school already has a complete plan in place. You called us here because there's something you want us to do, isn't that so?" How could Wei Zhao fail to see Ding Binggong's meaning?
What Ding Binggong had said before was mere courtesy, to spare the young lady's feelings — though by her temperament, she would not care about such things in the least. And Wei Zhao judged that the purpose of this summons was that Ding Binggong had truly run into some trouble, and that he must have first sought Gu Pengzhan's instructions, received an affirmative answer, and only then sent Wang Zhifeng to call the three of them over.
Ding Binggong glanced at Wei Zhao, then at Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu. The two said nothing, clearly endorsing Wei Zhao's words. Ding Binggong was secretly startled: so the young lady and Little Shu deferred to Wei Zhao?
Still, that was fine — with a clever one like Wei Zhao around, much trouble would be spared. So Ding Binggong spoke directly: "Here is the situation. The school has deliberated, and there is no problem with mobilizing social forces for the donation drive. But getting those bosses to actually open their hands and part with their money is no easy matter. The bosses who received invitations may generously donate ten or twenty thousand, but for the orphanage that is hardly a great sum. My thought is this: since we are holding a fundraiser, we should raise as much as we can — at the very least, enough to ease the orphanage's immediate need."
"Mm, Principal Ding is right." Wei Zhao nodded and said no more, listening as Ding Binggong continued.
"First, to get those socialites to donate willingly, we should at least put on a performance. And a performance requires hosts — and by the prevailing custom, the hosts had best be beauties... beauties are easy on the eyes..." Ding Binggong gave a dry laugh. "Tasteless, I know, but to get the big spenders to open their purses, a little tastelessness is required. Now, our school has three campus beauties in all: Yaoyao, Little Shu, and Tang Yun — and it seems Feng Xiaoxiao has just joined their number?"
Wei Zhao was rather surprised that the staid Ding Binggong would say such a thing. As for Gu Mengyao, being called a campus beauty by the principal made her rather embarrassed, whereas Little Shu accepted it with pleasure.
"Principal Ding wants Little Shu and me to be the hosts?" Gu Mengyao asked.
"Of course. That is my idea; whether you are willing is something I still have to discuss with you," Ding Binggong said with a nod.
"Of course we can!" Gu Mengyao nodded without refusing. "If I can contribute a share to the orphanage, I'll do it without hesitation."
"Hosting? I'm not really suited to that..." Shen Yushu, however, had no wish to do it. Standing primly on stage for so long would be genuinely difficult for someone as fidgety as her.
"How about this: let Tang Yun and Yaoyao host — the two of them are about the same height," Wei Zhao thought for a moment, and made the decision on Tang Yun's behalf.
"That works too." Ding Binggong knew of Wei Zhao's relationship with Tang Yun and was not surprised. That had been his very meaning in calling Wei Zhao over as well — after all, he was not close to Tang Yun and could not have raised it with her directly.
