Chapter 1009 — A Little Smitten
"Oh..." Wei Zhao nodded, then asked as if casually, "By the way, what exactly happened when you fainted so suddenly last time? Are you ill?"
"Oh... it's nothing..." Feng Xiaoxiao shook her head. She did not want Wei Zhao to know she had a terminal illness — if he did, her "revenge" would turn into his pity, and what meaning would her "revenge" have then?
Hmph, Wei Zhao, you made my life hell before, and I am not going to let you off. I am simply using you as an experiment in love — making you fall for me, and then making you miserable over me!
Wei Zhao nodded, said nothing more, and drove on.
"Wei Zhao, there's hardly any traffic now — gun it, would you? Let me have some fun?" Feng Xiaoxiao turned to look at him.
"Why would I gun it for no reason? Don't you know how dangerous speeding is?" Wei Zhao frowned. "Nine crashes out of ten come from going too fast. Do you have a death wish?"
"Heh... a death wish, is it?" Feng Xiaoxiao only shook her head and gave a faint sigh.
Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback — then his heart sank. There was a hidden meaning in her words: that she did not have much time left to live. Yet there was no way for him to take up that thread. He could only let out a sigh she would not notice, and his pity for Feng Xiaoxiao deepened...
She was an optimistic, spirited girl. From the moment he had first met her, Wei Zhao had never once seen a trace of gloom or negativity in her. Had he not personally witnessed the strangeness of Feng Xiaoxiao's body, and heard his comrade-in-arms Feng Tianlong describe her true condition, Wei Zhao would never have believed that this beautiful girl before him had not long to live.
Setting aside the misgivings and the guilt in his heart toward Tang Yun, Wei Zhao found that he really was beginning to like the girl in front of him.
Wei Zhao did not want her to die, yet there was nothing he could do. For an illness even the old man was helpless against, Wei Zhao could not possibly have any remedy. Though he was called a divine physician, in truth even a divine physician was not omnipotent. He could indeed cure certain known terminal illnesses and defy fate for others, but for an unknown ailment — when he did not even know its cause — how was he supposed to treat it?
"Hey, Wei Zhao, do you like me?" Feng Xiaoxiao gave up on getting him to race. She knew how stubborn he was: whatever he said he would do, he did, and whatever he refused, he rarely changed his mind about.
"..." Wei Zhao gave no answer.
"Mm, you really don't like me? Not even a little? Just the tiniest bit?" Feng Xiaoxiao would not give up.
"..." Wei Zhao still did not answer.
"Hey, when you touched me at the auction, didn't you feel anything at all?" Feng Xiaoxiao grew anxious.
"I did." Seeing that Feng Xiaoxiao was wandering further and further off the rails, Wei Zhao had no choice but to answer.
"Then have you been smitten with me?" Hearing his affirmative reply, Feng Xiaoxiao was delighted, and pressed her advantage.
"A little." Wei Zhao nodded.
"Then why did you turn me down?" His answer only left her puzzled.
"I didn't. It's only today that I've just started to like you," Wei Zhao said. "Back in Yanjing I felt something, but I wasn't sure."
Wei Zhao had indeed felt something for Feng Xiaoxiao before, but out of caution toward her he had kept that feeling locked at the bottom of his heart. Only today had he finally let it out.
"Ah! I'm so happy! Happy to death!" Feng Xiaoxiao was so excited she was dancing. "So hard work really does pay off! Then you agree to let me be your little wife?"
"Yunyun agreed to it?" Wei Zhao asked in return.
"Yes, of course Sister Tang Yun agreed — otherwise why would she have let me be alone with you?" Feng Xiaoxiao nodded eagerly.
"You didn't pressure her, or set some trap so that she had no choice but to accept you?" Wei Zhao asked.
"Ah... well... of course not!" Feng Xiaoxiao would never admit to that. "Sister Tang Yun accepted me because she saw what a good person I am."
"Pff..." Wei Zhao nearly drove the car into a tree. A good person? Still, he knew perfectly well what had really happened, and did not call her out on it.
"What are you laughing at?" Seeing his strange smile, Feng Xiaoxiao felt wronged. "It really was Sister Tang Yun who accepted me of her own accord!"
Wei Zhao shrugged. "I really don't know what goes on in your head. A girl as pretty as you — what kind of boyfriend couldn't you find? Yet you insist on being another woman's little wife!"
"So what?" Feng Xiaoxiao was utterly unfazed. "Hmph, if I didn't take the spot, plenty of others would be fighting over it! That Shen Yushu, for one — always acting cute with her oh-oh-oh. Wei Zhao, whatever you do, don't let her bewitch you!"
Wei Zhao shook his head. Feng Xiaoxiao and Shen Yushu had clearly become rivals; the days to come would give him a headache.
"We're on Ningshi Road. Where's your home?" As he spoke, Wei Zhao's car had already reached Ningshi Road.
"Turn left at the intersection ahead, then about five hundred meters and we're there." Feng Xiaoxiao glanced at the road.
Five hundred meters was not far at all; in the blink of an eye they were there, and Wei Zhao's car pulled up at the gate of a residential compound.
The compound was large in scale, but it was not one of those very luxurious ones — from which it could be seen that Feng Xiaoxiao's family was not especially well off... And when Wei Zhao thought about it, that made sense. Feng Xiaoxiao had lost her mother young, and Feng Tianlong alone had raised her. High as his yearly salary might be, he lived a life of licking blood off a blade's edge, and a million or so a year was hardly enough to afford one of those luxury villas.
"This is it..." Feng Xiaoxiao directed Wei Zhao to drive into the compound and park in front of one of the buildings. "My home is right here. Unit Three, top floor."
"Be careful going up, and send me a message when you get home." Wei Zhao nodded and said to Feng Xiaoxiao.
In truth, Wei Zhao had only said it offhand. The compound's security was quite good — patrol cars passed through at regular intervals, and there was generally little danger of bad people. Besides, every unit entrance had an electronic door, and the elevators inside were all under camera surveillance.
"You... don't want to come up and sit for a while?" Feng Xiaoxiao suddenly felt reluctant to part. She had been so happy today, and she was terribly afraid that it was all a dream — that once she went upstairs, she would find that none of it had been real.
Though in her heart Feng Xiaoxiao had always carried on her romance with Wei Zhao with the aim of taking revenge on him and breaking his heart — that way she could savor the taste of love in the final moments of her life, and at the same time achieve her goal of revenge!
