Chapter 899 — The Young Miss Takes Advantage?

The Blossom Guardian

Wang Zhifeng shook his head. What had gotten into Tang Yun, to turn so cold? Could Wei Zhao have said something to her — could she have learned about those matters of his, and only then dared to treat him with such indifference? At the thought, Wang Zhifeng couldn't help feeling a little uneasy...

Knowing Tang Yun's temperament, though life was far better now than before, she would never be so extravagant as to take a taxi. Yet this time she flagged one down and rode it straight to the villa district.

How beautiful! That was Tang Yun's first impression on arriving at the villa district. Every house was spacious and bright, lovelier even than Fatty Lai's. When she had first seen her own family's new home, she had thought it beautiful enough; only upon coming here did she learn what luxury really meant.

So Gu Mengyao's family was this wealthy! Tang Yun sighed inwardly. If she truly had to contend with the young miss, what did she have to contend with?

But the thought vanished as quickly as it came. Tang Yun's whole heart was fixed on Wei Zhao now. She paid the fare, walked up to villa a0033, and pressed the doorbell.

"Sister Yao Yao, someone's at the door," Shen Yushu said.

"Oh..." Gu Mengyao was gazing blankly at Wei Zhao, no telling what was on her mind. At Shen Yushu's words she gave only an absent "oh."

"Sister Yao Yao?" Shen Yushu called again.

"Oh..." Again, only that single syllable, and nothing more.

With no other choice, Shen Yushu ran off to answer the door.

"Wei Zhao..." Gu Mengyao had not caught a word of what Shen Yushu said. Her thoughts had long since drifted back to the first time she met Wei Zhao. Back then he wore a shabby, countrified tunic of coarse cloth and trousers too old to be called old. Gu Mengyao, never good at dealing with strangers, had naturally recoiled at heart from this somewhat slovenly stranger.

But after Wei Zhao bathed and changed his clothes, Gu Mengyao had to admit he cut quite a fine figure — a boy who looked like that would surely have no shortage of admirers. Yet she simply felt nothing for him. A stranger had appeared out of nowhere in their villa; how could she grow used to it all at once?

After a tremendous row with Daddy, Gu Mengyao had no choice but to accept the reality of Wei Zhao's presence. But out of an instinctive rejection and wariness of strangers, the young miss gave him no pleasant looks. And fearing Wei Zhao might do something improper to her, she called her dear friend Xiao Shu over to keep her company in the villa.

As Wei Zhao settled in, frictions multiplied. After drinking a soda that had Wei Zhao's saliva on it, Gu Mengyao nearly lost her mind! She had indirectly kissed that scoundrel? Her disgust was beyond measure; she truly wanted to drive the wretch out of the villa!

But now? Now she ached for him, wept for him, and for his sake cast aside her own shyness and reserve. Why? When exactly had things begun to change? From the first time he saved her? Or had long familiarity simply made her accept him without her noticing?

Gu Mengyao did not know, truly did not know. For reasons she could not name, she simply no longer disliked him. On the contrary, she had come to depend on him, to count him as one of the household, one of her own family. With him there, she felt so very safe...

For fear of losing Wei Zhao, the young miss had, for the first time in her life, squabbled jealously with another pretty girl, saying things that made even herself cringe with embarrassment!

And just today, when Wei Zhao said they must learn to look after themselves, it was as though Gu Mengyao's heart had been torn to shreds — a wrenching, heart-rending pain like losing a loved one, just as when she had watched General Mighty get wounded by Yukun, or even worse...

She did not know where exactly Wei Zhao stood in her heart. Family? Kin? Friend? Or merely a hanger-on? Or perhaps... she did not know at all?

She truly did not know. She only knew that if she lost Wei Zhao, she would be miserable, utterly miserable...

"I'm sorry... I'm always bringing you trouble..." the young miss murmured, gently stroking Wei Zhao's cheek.

Shen Yushu ran to the villa gate, saw that it was indeed Tang Yun, and opened the door — though she was at a loss for what to say.

"How is Wei Zhao?" Tang Yun asked anxiously.

"Still the same..." Shen Yushu let her in. "You can see for yourself in a bit. Anyway, I think Brother Arrow will be fine — he's amazing!"

Tang Yun frowned. What good is what you think? she said to herself. You're no master prophet.

"Over there — that's Brother Arrow's room," Shen Yushu said, pointing it out after leading Tang Yun inside.

Tang Yun glanced around the ground floor of the villa, then asked casually, "Where do you two sleep?"

"Upstairs..." Shen Yushu answered without thinking.

"Oh. Heh." Tang Yun felt relieved.

"Ah, no — the downstairs rooms are guest rooms. Brother Arrow lives upstairs with Sister Yao Yao now," Shen Yushu said, realizing she had let something slip and hastily correcting herself.

"Oh. That's nice," Tang Yun said with a nod.

"Nice?" Shen Yushu blinked, eyes wide, and then it dawned on her: Tang Yun simply had not believed a word she said.

Shen Yushu shrugged. This mouth of mine — why must it be so quick? A regular chatterbox Shu. She had worked so hard to fool Tang Yun earlier, saying Sister Yao Yao and Brother Arrow were in the bath, and now the lie had collapsed all on its own.

Tang Yun entered Wei Zhao's room. The first thing she saw was Gu Mengyao sitting by the bed. She seemed unaware that anyone had come; her right hand rested on Wei Zhao's cheek. Tang Yun's brows knitted unconsciously, and she felt a little uncomfortable.

Tang Yun had already let her anger cool, and she had not come here to quarrel with the young miss — only to keep watch over Wei Zhao and see that he was all right. But Gu Mengyao needn't be quite so shameless! Wei Zhao had fainted; how could she take advantage of him?

"Ahem, ahem!" Tang Yun cleared her throat twice. "Men and women should not touch hands when giving or receiving. Young miss, please have some self-respect..."

Gu Mengyao had not noticed Tang Yun's arrival; startled by the sudden voice, her face flushed red, and the hand on Wei Zhao's cheek twitched before she snatched it away. Like a mistress caught by the lawful wife, she said with a touch of grievance, "I... I just saw that Wei Zhao's face was a little dirty, so I was wiping it for him. Don't misunderstand..."

The young miss was speaking incoherently.
