Chapter 730 — An Awkward Scene

The Blossom Guardian Page 1 of 2

"A marriage alliance has always been a minor thing. Even if I married you, when the interests of the Chen family and the Song family come into conflict, I still would not be able to help you." Qiu Lingshan spoke calmly. "So although we are brothers now, when that time comes, I cannot speak for the Song family — but I myself will stand behind you."

"Those words make me very happy." Chen Yutian smiled.

...

Wei Zhao left the intensive care ward and headed straight for the ward where Tang Yun's family was staying. Mother Tang had risen early that day — they were going to buy a house, and it was a great matter for the family; she had nearly lain awake all night over it, and had not fallen asleep until the small hours.

She opened the door for Wei Zhao, her face all smiles. "Xiao Yi, you're here!"

"Mm. Where's Tang Yun?" Wei Zhao glanced into the ward, saw no sign of her, and asked.

"In the washroom. We're buying a house today, so she got up early too. She's washing up," Mother Tang said.

"Have you eaten breakfast? When do we set out?" Wei Zhao asked.

"Not yet. We thought we'd grab a bite on the way." Mother Tang said, "Oh, Xiao Yi, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."

"What is it?" Wei Zhao sat down on the sofa to wait for Tang Yun.

"Tell me — should I use this money to buy a shopfront and go into some small business with your Uncle Tang, or should I put it in the bank and live off the interest?" Mother Tang was deeply torn over the question. "Three million in the bank earns a hundred thousand a year in interest, doesn't it? With that much money, what sort of business could ever earn it back?"

"Hmm..." Wei Zhao was in fact just as hopeless with money — otherwise he would never have handed the company over to Fatty Lai to run. "Let's ask a friend of mine in a bit and see what he says. He's an old hand in business."

"That would be best, then. Let's ask him!" Mother Tang nodded.

Tang Yun finished washing up and came out of the washroom, still in her pajamas. She had not expected Wei Zhao to come so early; she had been washing her hair in the washroom, and with the sound of the water covering everything she could not hear what went on outside. So Wei Zhao's arrival gave her quite a fright.

Summer pajamas are thin, and Tang Yun wore nothing beneath them; the points of her breasts stood out, and her lovely figure was revealed without the least concealment.

Seeing Wei Zhao's eyes fixed on her, Tang Yun felt both embarrassed and annoyed — yet pleased at the same time. If Wei Zhao had shown no interest in her, that would have been cause for sorrow.

Only, the situation was mortifying; the two of them had not yet reached that stage. Tang Yun hurried off with her head down, snatched up her outer clothes, and fled into the washroom without a word to Wei Zhao.

Mother Tang, for her part, did not catch on. She could not imagine what had gotten into her daughter — not even a greeting for Wei Zhao when he arrived. What grand-lady tantrum was this now? Did she think she really was some great lady? Mother Tang could not help feeling annoyed. She rose and pulled open the washroom door. "Yun'er, what are you doing? Xiao Yi is here and you don't even say hello?"

"I... I'm getting dressed..." Tang Yun was startled. She had just taken off her pajamas, and her chest was bare; the washroom door being yanked open all at once gave her a shock. Only when she saw it was her mother did she breathe easy.

"Getting dressed is getting dressed — Xiao Yi is hardly a stranger. One look won't hurt you. I don't know what you fill your head with all day!" The more Mother Tang thought about it, the more she felt this son-in-law must be firmly secured. How long had it been? Her family had already become millionaires — and in the future, would it not be tens of millions, hundreds of millions?

She had never imagined she had it in her to be a rich lady. Mother Tang was delighted, and set her mind to how her daughter might hold fast to Wei Zhao's heart — the two of them must not really break up, or her future life of comfort would crumble.

Tang Yun was angry and ashamed at once. She glared at her mother, unable to fathom what the woman was thinking. She was a girl — did her mother not fear she would come off the worse?

"What are you staring at? Hurry up and get dressed! Up with the dawn and still late to the fair — if the good houses are sold out, then what?" Mother Tang was impatient to go look at houses. In the old days, when there was no money, she had never given such things a thought; but now that there was money, she feared all the best spots would be picked over by others.

"All right, all right, I'm dressed!" Tang Yun had put on her clothes — an ordinary shirt and the shorts she had bought yesterday; they went together quite well.

Coming out of the washroom with her mother, Tang Yun felt a little embarrassed and did not dare look at Wei Zhao. Wei Zhao, though, seeing her today out of her school uniform, felt his eyes light up.

The flaws could not hide the virtue: cheap market-stall clothes though they were, on Tang Yun they looked lovely.

Wei Zhao called Fatty Lai. Fatty Lai had heard the day before that Tang Yun's family was buying a house today, so he had been ready since early morning, waiting for Wei Zhao and Tang Yun to arrive.

As for Fatty Lai — he had not slept a wink all night. He had been at the pharmaceutical plant, working overtime and urging the workers on to produce the antidote to the Seven-Herb Life-Severing Powder, and by a little past two in the morning it was at last all finished. It was rushed to the hospital without a moment's delay, and once it had been given to the comatose students, every one of them had now regained consciousness. They were still very weak, but they were out of danger.

It had to be said that the drug's effects were remarkable. It was not the fabled cure that banishes illness the instant it is taken, but in the eyes of most people such results amounted to a miracle drug — especially in the eyes of the students' parents, who were moved to tears of gratitude toward Dr. Guan Pharmaceuticals. When the reporters interviewed them, they did not stint their words in heaping praise on the company.

As for the responsibility of the school and the Gu Group, that was now very small indeed. The suspect in the poisoning had turned himself in, and the motive had been fully investigated. Every wrong has its author and every debt its debtor; naturally the parents did not blame the school.

What was more, the students were all fine now, and the parents could hardly keep kicking up a fuss. After all, in the face of Dr. Guan Pharmaceuticals' spirit of uncompensated generosity, to keep nitpicking and clinging to the matter would plainly make them public enemies.

And when Fatty Lai delivered the medicine, he had made it very clear that it was purely out of his personal friendship with Gu Pengzhan that he had worked through the night to rush out the miracle drug. What could the parents say to that?

The parents who had earlier wanted to transfer their children had all calmed down as well. It had never had anything to do with their children in the first place — why transfer at all?

By now the situation was perfectly clear: the school was no biochemical terror base, nor was it negligent in its management. Someone had deliberately and with premeditation poisoned the students. Such things were unavoidable anywhere; other schools were hardly guaranteed safe.

And so the matter came to a close for the time being; all that remained was for Gu Pengzhan to hold a press conference today. As for Fatty Lai, once he had finished with all of this, he was waiting specifically to help Wei Zhao buy a house.
