Chapter 199 — The Found Wallet
She had to make things clear with Wei Zhao. Otherwise, with him turning up at her house all the time, what was that supposed to mean?
If Wei Zhao was only toying with her, then he had better keep his distance from now on and stop pestering her!
If he was serious, then Tang Yun would set him a limit, and that was after the college entrance examinations. For one thing, she could review in peace and not let such distractions hurt her scores. For another, it would be a test for Wei Zhao. If he was just playing around, he would never have the patience to wait these few months until after the exams, and would have fallen for someone else long before.
If Wei Zhao truly waited until after her examinations, then giving him a chance would not be out of the question... College was a paradise for love, after all, and though Tang Yun was a good girl, she could not help yearning a little for romance beneath the moon and flowers.
Wei Zhao had not expected Tang Yun to say such a thing. Was this refusal, or acceptance?
Was she playing hard to get? He had just opened his mouth to reply when Tang Yun had already turned and drifted away toward Kang Xiaobo.
Wei Zhao hurried after her. Tang Yun had already recovered her usual calm, as if those words had never been spoken. She was still the same Tang Yun as before, only with a touch of shyness lingering between her brows, which made her look all the more lovely and set Wei Zhao's heart pounding.
When they reached the hospital payment window, they saw Kang Xiaobo standing there blankly, staring at the bill in his hand. Wei Zhao asked, "Xiaobo? Are the formalities done?"
"Boss, they want ten thousand yuan for the deposit. I don't have enough..." Kang Xiaobo said, a little embarrassed. He had rushed over in a panic with the payment slip, only to find he had no money.
"Oh?" Wei Zhao paused, then looked at Tang Yun. "Isn't Xiaofen's mother here?"
"Xiaofen's family is hardly better off than mine. All these years of treating her illness have cost a great deal, and they are in debt. Where would they find spare money?" Tang Yun sighed. "Will you advance it for now? I promise her family will pay you back."
"Me?" Wei Zhao was not one to meddle in other people's business, and people who had nothing to do with him never got his attention. But Xiaofen was different. She was, after all, the girl Kang Xiaobo had set his heart on, and if Wei Zhao could help, he naturally would.
The trouble was, the credit card Uncle Qing had given him was still lying in a drawer at home. He seldom spent money, so he had simply tossed the card aside.
Right now, apart from the thousand yuan he had asked for from Sun Jingyan as a reward, all he had in his pocket was Wu Chengtian's wallet.
Wei Zhao first handed the thousand yuan to Kang Xiaobo, then opened Wu Chengtian's wallet. Inside were some three to five thousand yuan in cash, and the rest was in US dollars, but all in large denominations, five-hundreds and one-thousands. Such bills were basically no longer in circulation and no longer issued, though they had never been demonetized.
Even so, they survived mostly as collector's items, for the price of a single note had already surpassed its face value, and no one would take such dollars out to spend.
That Wu Chengtian kept these large bills in his wallet showed plainly they were not for spending but for showing off. Wei Zhao had seen plenty of that type before, and it told him the so-called Wu family must be quite powerful. He gave Kang Xiaobo all the Chinese currency from the wallet. "Ask them if they take US dollars?"
Kang Xiaobo gratefully took the bills from Wei Zhao, then ran back to the payment window. "Excuse me, do you take US dollars?" "We do, but only for the deposit, not for the final settlement. The final bill must be paid in yuan," the clerk said.
"All right, thank you." Kang Xiaobo breathed a sigh of relief and ran back to Wei Zhao. "Boss, they take US dollars too, but only for the deposit, not for settlement." "Then go ahead and pay it." Wei Zhao handed Kang Xiaobo all the hundred-dollar bills from the wallet. As for the five-hundreds and one-thousands, the cashier might not even recognize them and could take them for counterfeits. "I had no idea you were so rich. You even carry US dollars." Tang Yun teased him with a glance. Still denying he was a young master? Who but a young master would carry so much money?
"Oh, this wallet? I picked it up," Wei Zhao said with a shrug.
"Picked it up?" Tang Yun froze, then grew annoyed. Did he take her for a fool? Where could one pick up such a thing? Why had she never picked up anything like it? "If you don't believe me, look at the ID inside." Wei Zhao pulled out Wu Chengtian's ID card and waved it before her eyes.
"What?" Tang Yun stared with wide, disbelieving eyes. This wallet really was not Wei Zhao's? He had really picked it up? "You really picked it up? Then... how dare you spend the money inside?"
"Wasn't it you who told me to advance it..." Wei Zhao tucked the ID back in and slipped the wallet casually into his pocket.
"I..." Tang Yun hardly knew what to say. "If you don't return it to its owner, how worried he must be?"
"Ha, the owner is not worried." Wei Zhao smiled. "He gave it to me."
Would Wu Chengtian be worried? Let him worry! Wei Zhao was not afraid of what Wu Chengtian might do in the least. When it came down to it, Wu Chengtian could only swallow this loss in silence!
He had stolen Wei Zhao's wallet first, and Wei Zhao had only taken his in return. Even if he called the police, it would do him no good. Besides, would he dare call the police? The Wu family he belonged to must be a great clan. Could they afford to lose such face?
So Wei Zhao simply did not care. What if he spent his money? Wu Chengtian should count himself lucky Wei Zhao had not extorted hush money from him on top of it.
"Gave it to you?" Tang Yun plainly did not believe him, but since he had said so, there was nothing more she could say. Though she did not approve of what Wei Zhao was doing, there was good cause. Xiaofen urgently needed the hospitalization fee.
Tang Yun understood very well that if the medical fees were not paid in full today, Xiaofen would very likely be driven straight out of the hospital once her IV drip was finished. After all, a hospital was no charity, and without money they would not let you stay for free.
"Boss, thank you! I will definitely pay you back!" Kang Xiaobo ran back excitedly with the payment receipt, thanking Wei Zhao over and over. He was truly moved. He felt he had not called him boss for nothing. For such a sum, who else would have produced it without a moment's hesitation?
"Pay back what? Forget such a trifle." Wei Zhao had no expectation that Kang Xiaobo would repay him, much less that Xiaofen's family would. If Xiaofen and Kang Xiaobo truly had a future together, then he as their 'boss' would hardly miss this little money.
"Boss..." Kang Xiaobo wanted to say more, but Wei Zhao cut him off with a wave of his hand.
"Let's go. Hurry to the ward and have a look," Wei Zhao said.
"Right! Right! Hurry to the ward." Kang Xiaobo nodded, giving Wei Zhao a grateful look.
